M.Ed, counselling psychology, Registered Clinical Counselor

Thirty years ago, I started a career in the fitness industry as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer. I worked in many sectors of the industry including non-profit, for profit, community centres and eventually my own personal training business. I became a Master trainer of fitness leaders, opened a fitness education school and taught others to become personal trainers and group fitness instructors. I was on the board of directors for the BC Recreation and Parks Association and was the first Canadian Woman to be part of the advisory board for the American Council on Exercise. I authored two books and developed over a dozen fitness resource manuals and I have presented at fitness, health, and wellness conferences all over the world.

As the years went by my clients and even some of my students would speak to me about their mental health struggles. Struggles with body image, eating disorders, low self-esteem, inner critics, trauma and much more. I really wanted to be able to help these individuals, but I recognized their issues were outside my scope of practice, education, and knowledge. Not satisfied by this limitation and wanting a new challenge for myself, I decided, at age 46, to go back to school and add a Master’s degree in counselling psychology to my tool kit. While I love fitness and will always remain involved in the industry, I am happy to make this career shift and truly be able to bring together both mind and body in my work. I am proud to say that I have graduated with a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology from Simon Fraser University and I’m a registered clinical counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.

What I bring to our sessions is my vast knowledge, experience, and expertise from thirty years of living and breathing health and fitness coupled with a solid foundation of psychology so we can truly integrate the body-mind experience into our sessions. I am a certified, trauma-informed yoga instructor with a personal mindful meditation practice. It is important for you to know I practice the tools I offer my clients because I know how beneficial they are. I am not all about academia. I have a sense of humor and I like to use it when appropriate in therapy. Some issues are difficult to discuss, and humor can be used as a form of healing. I enjoy time in nature, time by myself, reading, golf, pickleball and any activity where I get to move my body.

how smiling hearts came to be

how it started

In 2012, my wife and I decided instead of buying gifts for one another over the holiday season, we would take our money and purchase needed items for individuals on the downtown east side of Vancouver. We made 40 gifts bags stuffed with hats, gloves, socks, underwear, and holiday treats. Within five minutes all 40 bags were gone and we did not even make a dent in the line. We did not realize how great the need was. We decided we would do what we could over the next year to help wherever the need was greatest. We approached Cobbs Bakery and took their leftover baking every Monday and individually wrapped items for distribution. We bought Pizza for 100 people with the help of family and friends who all jumped on board once they heard what we were doing. We kept getting asked what organization we were with, so we came up with the name Smiling Hearts and printed a few low budget t-shirts for us to wear so people would know who we were.

I knew that once I became a Registered Clinical Counsellor, this would be the name of my practice. When my heart smiles I feel like there are no obstacles I cannot overcome, and I feel pure joy within. Smiling Hearts is much more than a name. It is a mindset that guides my life. I ask myself, “what would make my heart smile” or “what would make someone else’s heart smile” and the answer comes from a place within me of kindness, compassion and caring.

Life can sometimes darken our hearts and make things feel difficult or even insurmountable. A cloud may cover our hearts, sending us into a deep fog where symptoms like anxiety and depression can take hold. There are any number of life circumstances that can lead to experiencing mental health challenges. Some begin before we are even able to speak and while others emerge throughout the lifespan. The struggles are real, and it may feel as though there is no way out. However, there are tools and resources to help you smile from your heart once more or maybe for the first time.

get your mental health back on track

My philosophy of counselling

My philosophy is based on the belief that you are the expert in your own life and truly know what is best for you. You came equipped with all you need to thrive in this life. Counselling can help you to uncover what is already there, especially when you hit inevitable bumps in life. Healing comes from within, when we are in connection with our selves. Being seen and heard by a caring person can help to renew that connection. Therapy is a collaboration. It would be my honour to collaborate with you to get your mental health back on track.

What type oftherapy can I provide?

I have many tools and resources that can be used during our sessions depending on what you need and want from our time together. If you are working through trauma, I have received specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.  Whether the experience of your trauma is complex (meaning it has been going on for a long time) or due to a single event, EMDR is an evidenced-based practice (lots of clinical studies supporting its effectiveness) and an effective way of helping you integrate and move forward in your life and past the trauma.

I also use Internal Family System Therapy developed by Richard Swartz. This therapy looks at specific parts of the self (sub-personalities) and allows you to get to know these different parts in a way that helps you understand for example why an inner critique part of you has such a loud voice that you cannot seem to get it out of your head. Or why a part of you seems to make you do a particular behavior which you do not actually want to do. For example, you might want to lose weight and commit to eating healthy only to be taken over by a part of you that sends you bingeing for everything and anything in the fridge, sabotaging your efforts leaving you confused as to why you continue to engage in this cycle. You might even experience warring parts where one voice says one thing only to be fought by another voice creating conflict and a polarity of your internal family system.

More common types of therapy like Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) challenges thought patterns while Emotion Focussed Therapy (EFT) has a spotlight on your emotional life and Narrative Therapy, (NT) on the stories we tell ourselves about our life. While this may all sound very technical, what you need to know is that you get to choose the direction we will take. Anything that is offered in session for you to try will be explained in detail and you get to choose if you want to try something or not. You will always be in the driver’s seat and in control of where the session goes.

I have provided links to some of the therapies I have mentioned so you can do some research for yourself. I would be happy to discuss and answer any questions you might have around these tools.
